Paris Saint-Germain were the protagonists of a summer transfer window that, for many, resulted in a disappointing performance, although for others, it was one of the best transfer markets of the Qatari era at the club.
Following Kylian Mbappe's departure to Real Madrid after representing the Parc des Princes outfit for seven years, many expected PSG to make a move for a superstar attacker. In fact, Dani Olmo's agent recently revealed a supposed attempt by the Parisian management to sign Lamine Yamal, with an offer of 250 million euros.
In a previous article, which you can read by clicking here, we discussed why we find it hard to believe that PSG did, in fact, make this offer, beyond the fact that it makes sense that any club would appreciate the profile of such an interesting player with so much potential like Yamal.
Nonetheless, it's worth paying attention to the recent report from Marca (h/t Le10Sport) which informs that FC Barcelona is preparing a huge contract extension for Yamal when he turns 18, which will be on July 13, 2025. Barcelona's intention is to extend their prodigy’s stay until the summer of 2030, with a salary increase included.
FC Barcelona set to offer XXL contract extension to keep €250 million star from PSG
Although not explicitly stated, it's clear that Barcelona will likely seek to include a ridiculous release clause in Yamal’s contract, similar to what they did with Pedri, who has a release clause set at one billion euros. From our perspective, this type of clause should be illegal, as any such clause should be proportional to the player’s salary. Barcelona’s financial situation suggests they won’t be able to offer him such a significant salary increase.
Recently, PSG’s sporting advisor, Luis Campos, praised Lamine Yamal, describing him as an excellent footballer but emphasising that they are happy with the offensive players that the Parisian side currently has.
To be honest, I don't see a sporting need for PSG to have Yamal. On the media front, it is true that he would be a signing that would attract a lot of interest, new fans, and even new sponsors. But as it stands, it seems that Barcelona is not willing to let that happen so easily.
