Why the Marseille result will give PSG confidence
By Edward Otto
The French champions ran riot against fierce rivals Marseille. Les Parisiens were 0-3 victors courtesy of goals from Joao Neves, Leonardo Balerdi (own goal), and Bradley Barcola.
It was a much-needed result as Luis Enrique's side has not fared too well against the tougher sides this season in the Champions League.
Although this was a league game the victory was still crucial as they needed a confidence booster following an underwhelming start to the Champions League league phase.
Here at PSG Post, we discuss why this result will do them the world of good.
Why the Marseille result will give PSG confidence
It shows they can hold there own against the top sides
Before the Marseille game, PSG had struggled this campaign against the top teams they had faced. Les Parisens lost 2-0 to Arsenal at the Emirates, drew 1-1 at home to PSV, and narrowly beat Girona 1-0 at Parc Des Princes.
The best result they have had all season is the edgy victory over Girona. After the convincing win over Marseille, they will now believe that they can be more than a match for any opposition they come up against.
They were much more clinical against Marseille
The French champions have struggled to put away the chances that have fallen there way in games against the tougher opposition.
The match against Girona comes to mind as Luis Enrique's side should have won by a larger margin than 1-0. What was impressive about the Marseille game is that they were more clinical than usual despite deploying a false nine in Lee Kang-In.
How did PSG fare in the latest Le Classique?
PSG convincingly defeated Olympique de Marseille 3-0 at the Stade Velodrome in the latest edition of Le Classique.
Luis Enrique’s side entered the match following a frustrating Champions League draw against PSV, where they missed key chances and contended with injuries to Hernandez and uncertainties over Kolo Muani and Ramos.
Marseille, meanwhile, had made a strong start to the season with five wins from eight games, though injuries to Carboni, Blanco, and Nadir posed challenges.
Joao Neves stood out as PSG’s most dynamic player, excelling in duels and scoring his first goal for the club, further solidifying his role in midfield.
Ousmane Dembele, after switching positions with Lee Kang-In, adopted a deeper playmaking role, orchestrating PSG’s attacks and assisting in the third goal. While his inconsistent finishing saw him miss a clear chance, his overall performance reaffirmed his growing importance to the team.
