PSG dropped points again on the weekend when they travelled to the Decathlon Arena to face Lille. Nuno Mendes opened the scoring on the 66th minute with a brilliant free kick before Ethan Mbappé equalised with a shot just outside the box with five minutes left of the game. The match finished 1-1 with one of the biggest talking points being Mbappé's brother Ethan scoring against his former side. Here at PSG Post we discuss why the result on the weekend is not the end of the world.
Should we worry after PSG's frustrating draw against Lille?
They were missing several key players
Luis Enrique was not able to call upon the services of Marquinhos, Ousmane Dembélé, Khvicha Kvaratskhelia and Joao Neves because of injuries. PSG's injuries woes didn't get better after the game as Bradley Barcola had to withdraw from the French national team as he played through a lingering hamstring problem during last weekend's game.
If Enrique had a full strength team they would have caused Lille more problems. The result also shows the difference in quality between Les Parisiens starters and bench players. If the squad players don't improve their performance then they will find game time hard to come by once everyone is fully fit.
They know they can't get complacent
The European champions know that they are the team that everyone wants to beat in France . The teams they play in the league are extremely motivated when they come up against them as they have been the dominant force in French football since the takeover in 2011.
Enrique sent out the wrong message by opting not to start the likes of Achraf Hakimi, Vitinha, Nuno Mendes and Illia Zabarnyi who were fully fit. Not starting those players would have spurred on the Lille players as they would have thought PSG didn't need to start their best players to win games in their domestic league. Enrique wanted to rotate as they had a intense midweek game against Barcelona and several players were called up for their country this international break.
The European champions showed what they are capable of when they played Barcelona
PSG narrowly defeated Barcelona 1-2 at the Estadi Olimpic Lluis Companys . They exploited Hansi Flick's high line on several occasions and deserved to come away with atleast a point. The win is impressive considering that several key players such as Ousmane Dembele, Marquinhos, Joao Neves and Khvicha were injured for the game. Those players would have made a big difference particularly the attackers against Barca's defence.
