On Thursday, the Ligue de Football Professionnel (LFP) decided to unanimously postpone the clash between RC Lens and PSG that was scheduled on April 11 to May 13, in order to help PSG in their bid to win the Champions League for the second consecutive time.
This decision, which was vehemently rejected by Lens, was meant with heavy criticism from Javier Tebas and football fans worldwide, including Liverpool fans that will see their Champions League quarter-finals opponents have a week of rest in between the two legs of the tie.
Additionally, the LFP also postponed the game between RC Strasbourg and Stade Brestois on the same date, with the intention to help French clubs in Europe in order to improve their UEFA Index.
Then, why is it still considered unfair for the LFP to have postponed the game between Lens and PSG which was supposed to be the title-decider?
Why it was unfair that the LFP postponed Lens vs PSG?
While it is important to remember that the decision rendered by the LFP came with the intent to help French clubs in Europe, it remains a hard pill to swallow for Lens and Liverpool, who are respectively their rivals in the Ligue 1 title race and their opponents in an upcoming crucial Champions League quarter-finals.
This postponement is set to give an overwhelming adavantage to the Parisians in both competition. Luis Enrique and his team were set to face Les Sangs et Or in-between two important Champions League games, forcing the Spaniard to make difficult choices. At the same time, these two clashes against Liverpool are crucial for both sides with the Reds looking to win the competition following an underwhelming league campaign, whereas Paris hope to win their second consecutive title.
Arne Slot's team will have to play three games in eight days when the Parisians will have a week of rest between the two games against Liverpool. This gives an unprecedented advantage to the best team in Europe. Additionally, Lens will in turn have to play three games in a week and face the Parisians in-between two games which will have a tremendous impact on their chase for the Ligue 1 title.
Therefore, the decision taken by the LFP have given a massive advantage to the Parisians who already have one of the best squad in Europe in their chase of both Ligue 1 and Champions League titles.
