Before the beginning of the season, PSG signed Lucas Chevalier from Lille LOSC for approximately €55 million. This move was made to not just replace Gianluigi Donnarumma who was on his way out of the club, but also to prepare the future with a promising 23-year-old goalkeeper who secured Ligue 1 Goalkeeper of the season in the previous campaign.
On paper, this move made complete sense as Chevalier's technical abilities were perfect for Luis Enrique's system. The Frenchman is a ball-playing keeper who is also great on his line as he proved it with the Dogues in domestic competition and in European camppaigns.
Unfortunately, this move to a bigger club as been very difficult for him as he struggled to consistently perform at his best, which led to Matvey Safonov finishing the season as PSG's number one between the posts. To add insult to injury, the Frenchman's diminished playing time meant that he was not included in Didier Deschamps' World Cup squad, ending his dreams to take part in the competition.
Should PSG part ways with Lucas Chevalier after just one season?
Luis Enrique and the club should put him in better condition and give him another shot at number one
The 24-year-old has had a bad debut season with the club and it cost him his starting role at the club and his spot in the France national team. However, he remains a very young goalkeeper with an immense talent. He can bounce back from this massive setback and regain his spot as PSG's number one goalkeeper next season.
He will need to work hard and make the most of his rare opportunities to show Luis Enrique that he still has a future at the club. However, there are rumours that the club could be looking to sign another goalkeeper next season while there are also an increasing number of rumours surrounding him with multiple Premier League clubs being reportedbly interested to sign him.
Bringing him in was a mistake and they should sell him as soon as possible
After this first season, we could see that the lights were far to bright for Chevalier as he failed to have a lasting positive impact on the team. Now it is said that the club would be open to listen to offers for the Frenchman with both Tottenham Hotspur and Aston Villa reportedly being interested to sign him this summer.
