On Wednesday, Paris Saint-Germain and Luis Enrique will host Premier League side Chelsea at the Parc des Princes in the first-leg of their Champions League Round of 16. Over the weekend, the European Champions suffered their first home loss of the season in Ligue 1 against AS Monaco. It was their fourth game against Sébastian Pocognoli's team this season and their third in recent weeks as they secured their spot in the Round of 16 after a 5-4 aggregate win in the Play-offs.
These games against Monaco highlighted many flows of Luis Enrique's team that could be easily exploited by Liam Rosenior and his team.
Here are three things Luis Enrique and PSG need to fix before facing Chelsea in the Round of 16 of the Champions League.
Three things Luis Enrique should fix before facing Chelsea
1- Defensive worries
Last season, Paris' defence seemed almost unbeatable, with the partnership Marquinhos-Pacho being the backbone of their historical success. Obviously, Gianluigi Donnarumma was a key part of their defensive solidity despite being the last line of defence of the team in their run to the Champions League final.
However, with his departure, Marquinhos' reduced role in the team following Zabarnyi's arrival, and the difficult adaptation of Lucas Chevalier at the club, Paris' defence has been disappointing thus far. Even Willian Pacho who was a rock and a pilar of his side has delivered underwhelming performances in recent weeks against Monaco.
The French Champions have conceded seven goals against Monaco and have been easily cut through when defendig fastbreaks, which could be lethal when facing a team like Chelsea.
2- Too many chances wasted
One of the other force of the team last season was undoubtedly their ability to be lethal in front of goals. Ousmane Dembélé was the one in front pages as he delivered his most prolific season ever on his way to Ballon d'Or glory.
However, with all the injuries sustained by the team this season (Dembélé, Doué, Kvaratskhelia, etc.), Luis Enrique has experienced a profound lack of continuity in his team with players still needing to reach their pick of form after recovering from injuries.
Bradley Barcola and Gonçalo Ramos are the only offensive players that managed to avoid injuries and are two of the top scorers of the team despite limited minutes for the Portuguese. Nonetheless, PSG needs to many chances to score and are often punished by their opponents, which could be cotsly against Chelsea.
3- A midfield harmony to find
Fabian Ruiz has played a pivotal role in PSG's historical Champions League run last year, unfortunately, he will miss the first-leg against Chelsea on Wednesday through injury, which will also likely be the case for Joao Neves. Both players have been missing from the team for some time now and their absence gave a few headaches to Luis Enrique.
In this period, Paris' midfield has appeared less dominant. Warren Zaire-Emery who has become a key player this season has stepped up alongside Vitinha. However, the third member of the trio is still undecided while Joao Neves and Fabian Ruiz recover from their respective injuries.
