PSG ran out 5-0 winners against fierce rivals Marseille on the weekend, courtesy of goals from Ousmane Dembélé (brace), Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, Lee Kang-In, and an own goal from Facundo Medina. Luis Enrique's side was well worth the heavy victory as they were the dominant side throughout the 90 minutes. The French champions also limited De Zerbi's side to one shot on target. They just shaded possession but were ruthless in front of goal as they scored five of the seven shots they had on target.
Here at PSG Post, we discuss why the result last night will send shock waves across Europe.
Why PSG's victory over Marseille will send shock waves across Europe?
It is their biggest ever win against Marseille
Before Sunday night, PSG had never defeated Les Phocéens by five goals. This should not surprise many people, as Marseille is one of the better teams in Ligue 1. The European champions played like a side that was eager to avenge the 1-0 defeat at the Stade de Vélodrome earlier this season. Their form is starting to get better, which is what they need with Lens chasing them in the title race. Les Parisiens have now won six games in a row against Marseille at the Parc des Princes and are currently on a seven-game winning streak in the league.
The slightest glimmer of hope for a league title is going for Marseille
If De Zerbi's side managed to win at the Parc Des Princes last night, the gap between them and PSG would have been six points, and they would have been seven points away from Lens. Marseille now finds itself in a race for Champions League football as it is three points behind third-place Lyon. If their form doesn't pick up, then they risk missing out on Champions League football next season. Roberto De Zerbi may also get sacked if they fail to get European football, as it would be deemed an underwhelming season.
It could give PSG the boost they need in the Champions League
Luis Enrique's side has not fared well in the Champions League this season. In the league phase, they had struggled against the likes of Athletic Bilbao (0-0), Sporting Lisbon (2-1), and Newcastle United (1-1). These results meant that they didn't qualify automatically for the next round of the Champions League, which is a disadvantage as they have to play two extra games. Sunday's result will give the players the belief that when everything clicks, they could be a formidable side. Belief is what they have been lacking whenever they have played a European side this campaign.
