PSG is facing Flamengo in the second-ever edition of the Intercontinental Cup. The Intercontinental Cup is a tournament that pairs the winners of each continent against each other in a playoff format. The UEFA Champions League winners are given a bye to the final.
Real Madrid won last year's edition after beating Mexican side Pachuca 3-0 at the Lusail Stadium in Qatar. This year's edition is taking place at the Ahmad bin Ali Stadium in Qatar. Here's why this game is illogical, even though winning will give the Brazilian side bragging rights over European clubs, particularly PSG.
Why PSG's game against Flamengo is not a good idea
There are too many games in football
Footballers are playing too much football. Footballers in general are playing more than ever, as the new Champions League format includes more games. The UEFA Nations League had more games last season than it had in previous editions, as the quarter-finals had two legs. More games are not ideal as they increase the likelihood of a player picking up an injury.
These could be fatal, as it is a World Cup year and players are trying their best to avoid injury. To make matters worse, South American sides tend to be more physical, and they will want to prove a point against a European side. The only saving grace for Luis Enrique's side is that Ligue 1 was reduced to 18 teams last season.
The Intercontinental Cup doesn't really benefit anyone
Playing a Brazilian club in Qatar before a Coupe de France tie against Vendée Fontenay Foot is a disaster waiting to unfold. The players would be tired after coming back from a flight from Qatar. They could risk losing that game against the fifth-tier French club, as they will play the game of their lives, while PSG will come out lethargic. To make matters worse, Luis Enrique's side will not learn much from a win against them as they are expected to come out victorious.
They won't face any Brazilian side in the Champions League
Les Parisiens are travelling across the globe to play opposition they probably won't play again in years, unless they win the Champions League. This is not the best preparation for Champions League games, as European clubs play a different style of football to South Americans. South American clubs tend to be more physical than European clubs, as they tend to be more passionate, while the European ones are more tactical in relation to their formations and players' positions.
