Les Parisiens are close to signing Aston Villa left-back Lucas Digne, with a verbal agreement reached between all parties. Initially, they wanted a young left back before Digne became a priority for Luis Enrique's side. A young left back would not have been ideal as they would need gametime for their development, particularly if they are under 21. If they don't get playing time, then it could stunt their growth at an important part of their career.
Here at PSG Post, we discuss why Digne would be a good signing for the European Champions despite not being at his best in the World Cup semi-final against Lamine Yamal's Spain.
It gives Nuno Mendes competition
Nuno Mendes is arguably the best left-back in the world. He is capable of holding his own against wingers such as Michael Olise and Lamine Yamal. The club needs a valuable backup for him, as if they overexert him, they risk him picking up an injury. Without a reliable backup, Mendes would be complacent, as he would know he was going to start every game. Digne would be a great backup for the 24-year-old, as he has played at the highest level at the club and international level. The Portuguese fullback picked up an injury in Portugal's last 16 clash against Spain. When he was substituted off, Nelson Semedo had a tough time against Yamal.
He has been at the club before
Digne was at PSG from 2013 to 2016, when the project was still in its early stages. This means the 32-year-old is familiar with Ligue 1 and the standards that PSG has set since the takeover began. It will not take him long to acclimatise to the league, which is important as Lionel Messi struggled in his first season at the club. The Argentine international scored six goals in 26 appearances, which is remarkable given his goal-scoring prowess. He also knows what it is like to play for a club that has expectations, as he was at Barcelona from 2016 to 2018.
He has chemistry with his other French teammates
Digne has been part of the French senior team since 2014, making 62 appearances for his country. The left-back featured in the World Cup for Les Bleus, so he has chemistry with Désiré Doué, Warren Zaire-Emery, Ousmane Dembélé, Lucas Hernandez, and Bradley Barcola. His last performance for the national team wasn't brilliant. He had trouble dealing with Yamal throughout the game and gave away a penalty when he fouled the Barcelona prodigy in the first half.
