In a surprising move, Paris Saint-Germain are set to bring back Aston Villa's left-back Lucas Digne to the French capital. The France international who is currently in a starting role is delivering an incredible World Cup as Didier Deschamps' side is set to face Fabian Ruiz's Spain in the semi-final of the competition.
PSG's board has triggered Digne's €10 million release clause from his contract and the 32-year-old should make his comeback to the club 10 years after his departure. The former FC Barcelona player has played for PSG from 2013 to 2016. He will come to the club to become Nuno Mendes' backup which will dramatically improved Luis Enrique's options at this position next season.
Lucas Digne has started the World Cup as a second option behind Theo Hernandez and saw his performances earn him a starting role. He should find an agreement with the club shortly and this move should be made official after the 2026 World Cup.
If the player reach an agreement with the club, it would be a huge blow to Aston Villa who are already set to lose Belgium international Youri Tielemans.
Lucas Digne is set to make his return at PSG as Mendes' backup
This move is another incredibly smart move from PSG's board during this transfer window as Digne's experience could be a major addition to the squad. He is coming out of an excellent season as Villa's number one option at left-back, he played 44 games and delivered seven assists as the Villans triumphed in Europa League.
As stated before, Lucas Digne will be brought in to primarily be Nuno Mendes' backup at left-back, up until last season, this role was Lucas Hernandez's. The France international is also a very experienced player, able to play left-back and centre-back, however, he is much more defensive-minded than Digne who has a great left foot as he is capable to deliver pinpoint crosses from his flank while remaining efficient defensively.
His profile, while different to Mendes' is similar to some extent as his offensive abilities are far greater than Hernandez's. This potential arrival could therefore mark the end of Lucas Hernandez's tenure at the club as his role could be dramatically reduced next season.
Following his first spell at the club, the 32-year-old knows the club and the fans perfectly, furthermore, he has the experience to become one of the leaders of the squad very quickly as they will seek a third consecutive Champions League title.
