PSG are closing in on the signing of Lille goalkeeper Lucas Chevalier after Fabrizio Romano posted ''Here we go, deal in place for the French GK to join PSG. Five-year contract to Chevalier, fee over €40m to Lille as Nasser Al Khelaifi closed the deal with Olivier Letang'' on Twitter.
It will be interesting to see which club pushes the hardest to sign Gianluigi Donnarumma, given his wage demands. It would be a shame if he does not get the move, as a goalkeeper of his quality is too good to play second fiddle. Here at PSG Post, we discuss why it could be a brilliant signing for the French champions.
He is set to be at the club for the next decade
Lucas Chevalier is only 23 years old, which is extremely young for a goalkeeper. He won't be at his peak until at least 30, as goalkeepers have longer careers than outfield players. It also means that they will not need to look at a new goalkeeper for a while. This is good as they prioritise other positions in the squad which need strengthening, as well as a cheap backup goalkeeper. Whilst he may not be as good as Gianluigi Donnarumma, he has the potential to reach his level later on in his career.
Chevalier is a ball playing goalkeeper
Chevalier fits the mold of a ball-playing goalkeeper, which is what Luis Enrique wants with his goalkeepers. Whilst Gianluigi Donnarumma is a brilliant shot stopper, he is not the traditional ball-playing goalkeeper. This means that Luis Enrique will be able to implement his playing out from the back style of play. The only issue with this would be if the center-backs make a mistake when Chevalier tries to play out from the back. It may also take a while for the center-backs to get used to that style of play.
He was the best goalkeeper in Ligue 1 last season
Chevalier was named in the Ligue 1 team of the season, which is remarkable when you consider that only two players in that starting eleven were non-PSG players. Given how dominant they have been in the French domestic league, this shouldn't come as a surprise.
Last season, he was named in the Ligue 1 team of the year ahead of Donnarumma. He kept 11 clean sheets in 33 league games for European-chasing Lille. It isn't a surprise that he is France's number two goalkeeper behind Mike Maignan, given how well he performed last season.
