Last season, Paris Saint-Germain recruited the promising Lucas Chevalier from Lille following the departure of Gianluigi Donnarumma to the Premier League and Manchester City. The Frenchman was set to be the number one option in between the posts for the European Champions. Unfortunately for him, he failed to consistently deliver top level performances and was replaced by Matvey Safonov mid-season.
While the club still managed to win a second consecutive Champions League with the Russian international in goal, the Parisians still looked for a goalkeeper in the summer transfer window, with Japan international shot-stopper Zion Suzuki being the main target. The then Parma player just came off a good 2026 World Cup with his country and was valued around €30 million and also appeared to have all the characteristics wanted by Luis Enrique.
While his signing could have been a double edged sword for the club with the future of both Safonov and Chevalier being uncertain, he could have been the future number one option at the club who at the time wanted to loan him for one season.
In the end, this solution ended the potential move for the Japanese who signed for Unai Enery's Aston Villa at the end of the window to replace Emi Martinez.
Should PSG have signed Zion Suzuki this summer?
Since signing for the Villans, the 23-year-old has delivered several impressive performances, showing immense qualities with his passing skills while remaining very efficient on his line and in his box in general. He seems to have all the qualities wanted by Luis Enrique for his goalkeeper thus the concrete interest showed for him this summer.
On the other hand, Paris had a difficult start this season, with Matvey Safonov struggling to be decisive in the first three Ligue 1 games. The Russian who was first recruited to be the second option behind Donnarumma and then Lucas Chevalier, he became the first option last season due to Chevalier's poor performances. Since then, he had to prove that he belonged between the posts for the best European team and that he is one of the best at his position in Europe.
Nonetheless, it appear that Suzuki who has received countless praises since his debut for Aston Villa, still appears to be superior in qualities than Safonov and is much younger. Therefore, his potential is far greater and he could have been the best option for the future.
