Would signing Zion Suzuki from Parma come to be a double-edged sword for PSG?

Since the beginning of the 2026 summer transfer window, PSG have been very active with sales and made several great moves with the departures of Gonçalo Ramos, Kang-In Lee and Randal Kolo Muani. The club made enormous profit from these sales and could bring more with the potential sales of Bradley Barcola and Ibrahim Mbaye.

Now the club is open to bring players to the club as the signing of France international Lucas Digne was officialised earlier today. The back-to-back European Champions are also looking to bring Japan international goalkeeper Zion Suzuki to the club, despite the presence of Matvey Safonov and Lucas Chevalier. This move will most likely bring to an end the tenure of either Safonov, Chevalier or both at the club.

However, while the 23-year-old Suzuki is very talented, having join the club could be detrimental to the team as they sined three goalkeepers in successive years and none were able to become the clear first option. The same scenario may therefore occur as the step appeared to be too high for Chevalier, it could be the same for the Japanese goalkeeper if he were to join the French capital this summer.

Is signing Zion Suzuki a good move for PSG?

Last season was weird for goalkeeper at PSG as Gianluigi Donnarumma who played a crucial part in PSG's first Champions League triumph was shown the door amid unfruitful contract extension talks. He was then replaced by Lucas Chevalier who joined from fellow French club Lille LOSC to be PSG's first-choice goalkeeper for the years to come. Unfortunately, he did not live up to the expectations placed in him and was sent on the bench to the profit of Matvey Safonov.

The Russian delivered beyond expectations and helped the club win a second consecutive Champions League title. Nonetheless, it was not enough to convince the club to entrust him with PSG's goalkeeping duty next season as they prepare to make a second bid for Suzuki, reportedly worth €35 million.

Signing a third first team goalkeeper could not only be a bad signal to the keepers at the club, but also to the ones coveted by the club as they may see that the trust of the club is volatile. It could send a bad precedent as they did not hesitate to sell players at this position quickly.

If Zion Suzuki were to sign for the club, let's hope for him that he will be able to quickly answer to all the questions on the pitch.
