Luis Enrique's side ended the league phase with a 1-4 victory away to Stuttgart in Germany. The French champions went 0-4 up courtesy of goals from Bradley Barcola and Ousmane Dembele (hat-trick) prior to the hosts forcing a consolation own goal from Willian Pacho with 15 minutes to go. The visitors fully deserved the result on the day as they went full throttle from the first minute. This emphatic win means that they will not need to play Bayern Munich or Real Madrid in the playoff phase. Here at PSG Post we discuss key takeaways from the game on Wednesday night.
Ousmane Dembele is PSG's most important player
Dembele was the star of the show yesterday for Les Parisens. He tapped the ball home after Barcola cut the ball back for him when he raced through on goal for his first, scored a rocket on the edge of the penalty box for his brace and completed his hattrick in the second interval after linking up well with Achraf Hakimi. It is mindboggling to think he could have had scored more if he was more clinical in the second half. The big chance that comes to mind was when the 27 year old opened his body up for a side foot finish but the resulting effort flashed wide of the post. If he keeps performing like this Khvicha may have be accept a role as a false nine.
The French champions attack was relentless vs Stuttgart's high-line
Dembele was not the only attacker that performed on the day as Desire Doue and Bradley Barcola were a complete menace when they were on the pitch. Barcola scored and got an assist while Doue registered an assist. Barcola's headed home after Doue had flicked on Dembele's corner in a crowded penalty area and assisted Dembele's first goal following a stunning counter-attacking move. Doue could have scored if it weren't for Fabian Bredlow who saved his driven shot on the 57th minute. If Stuttgart had a more defensive game plan they would have been able limit the amount of counter attacks the French champions had.
Defence needs shoring up
Luis Enrique will be gutted his side did not keep a clean sheet. The goal they conceded was a consolation own goal from Pacho as Les Parisens were 0-4 up . It also means they have kept two clean sheets in eight Champions League games this season . Enrique will want to work on this for the playoff round as the attack may not always click in games.
