As PSG are crowned champions of France for the fifth successive season, let’s have a look at three of the players who were the most valuable for the French side over the course of their Ligue 1 season.
Here are the three PSG players who have been the most vital in the securing of the Ligue 1 title.
Three PSG players who lifted the team to their fifth consecutive Ligue 1 title
3) Ousmane Dembélé
It does undoubtedly feel strange to pick Ousmane Dembélé considering just how few starts the Frenchman has made this season for PSG – only ten so far in the league. However, Dembélé has been in deadly form over the course of the league campaign – registering the most combined goals and assists of any PSG player this season, 17 (ten goals and seven assists) and has been excellent since returning from the injury woes that saw him miss a lot of game time over the first few months of the season. Dembélé, despite his lack of gametime in the competition, was elected as the Ligue 1 player of the season on Monday, and therefore it is only logical that he makes this list.
2) Vitinha
The ‘chef d’orchestre’, as he’s known as in France, Vitinha has had yet another exceptional League campaign, dictating the tempo and controlling games from the base of midfield. Whereas viewers who are more accustomed to watching Vitinha in the Champions League may seem him as a more combative midfielder who excels at winning the ball back, his performances in Ligue 1 are quite different, but just as impressive: The Portuguese midfielder has more time on the ball in the French top flight and therefore has a more creative role, typically trying to unlock opposition deep blocks with his devastating array of creative passing. Seven league assists from the base of midfield tells the whole story: it’s been another excellent season from the man at the heart of the Parisian midfield.
1) Warren Zaire-Emery
Of course Warren Zaire-Emery had to feature on this list: The Frenchman has played more minutes and started more games than any other PSG player in Ligue 1 this season, and his contribution has not gone unnoticed, as the PSG academy graduate has forced way into the plans of Didier Deschamps, having been selected in the France World Cup squad, announced yesterday. It’s not just this regularity that has made Zaire-Emery a favourite for Luis Enrique, but also the youngster’s remarkable versatility: Zaire-Emery is not just reliable in his natural central midfield role, he also excels at full-back – having had to fill in at both left and right back in the absence of both Achraf Hakimi and Nuno Mendes at various points over the course of this season.
