Senny Mayulu’s future at PSG looks uncertain as Premier League clubs lurk

Youngster Senny Mayulu’s future at PSG looks deeply uncertain, as his refusal to sign a contract extension means that he will only have one year left on his current deal this summer.

With Senny Mayulu’s contract expiring in the summer of 2027, it’s only fair to assume that if he doesn’t sign an extension with the European Champions, there is a non-zero chance that he will depart this summer, as PSG will be strongly averse to losing the talented youngster on a free transfer.

Could Mayulu leave PSG in the summer?

The young academy starlet has had a rapid rise to stardom over the last twelve months, becoming last May the third youngest player ever to score in a Champions League final, when he slotted home the fifth goal in PSG’s 5-0 romp to glory against Inter Milan. Since then, Mayulu has taken on greater responsibility, becoming a sporadic starter in PSG’s squad, and making some key contributions this season, including a vital goal away in Barcelona in the Champions League group phase.

One thing, however, that will perhaps prey on the youngster’s mind, is the fact that his minutes, especially as a starter, have drastically decreased in the last few weeks once the squad has been back to full fitness. Attackers such as Ousmane Dembélé and Desiré Doué finally returning from their injury woes, although of course a positive for the club, has meant that the youngsters who played so frequently in the first half of the campaign have now been consigned to a bench role.

Mayulu, and his fellow ‘titis’ Ibrahim Mbaye and Quentin Ndjantou shouldn’t be taken aback by this, however there will of course be a concern lurking in the back of their minds that they won’t get enough first team minutes in what is a key developmental stage of their careers.

Mayulu’s situation is rendered even more delicate by his contract – which as mentioned expires next summer. This has meant that the young Frenchman has his fair share of Premier League suitors, with both Chelsea and Arsenal reportedly interested in the young Frenchman. The prices being touted by media reports, around 60 million euros, seem hugely excessive for a player with such limited career game-time, but the reality of modern football and its market inflation means that these reports are probably not a million miles away from the truth. A 20 year old whose CV includes a Champions League final goal will evidently not be cheap in today’s market.

It’s up to Mayulu then: persevering in Paris would mean trying to fight his way into a very competitive Parisian attack (although he could potentially be promoted to fourth choice attacker were Bradley Barcola to depart in the summer, as some reports have suggested). Leaving would mean abandoning his childhood club, in whose academy he has developed.

Luis Enrique will be disappointed in PSG’s early exit in the French cup at the hands of Paris FC, an unfortunate mishap in a competition that could have presented PSG with the ideal chance to give their youngsters some game time. However, were PSG to extend their lead at the top of the table over the next weeks, surely Enrique will start to implement heavy rotation in the Parisian squad even at League level, especially in view of big Champions League clashes.
