Cristiano Ronaldo has made headlines recently. In an interview, he said that the pressure of playing for Real Madrid is different from playing for PSG.

Whilst there is some truth to the fact that there is different pressure in performing for the European Champions than Luis Enrique's side, putting on the French Champions jersey does come with a certain weight of expectation.

Despite there being less pressure this campaign than in previous seasons because of the recent departures of Lionel Messi, Neymar and Kylian Mbappe the team still has to put on a respectable showing in this season's Champions League. Here at PSG Post, we discuss why the club has to succeed on the pitch.

Why despite what Cristiano Ronaldo said, there is pressure playing for PSG

1. They have spent money under the Qatari ownership

Under the current owner Nassar Al-Khelaifi they have signed world-class players such as Thiago Silva, Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Edison Cavani, Lionel Messi, Neymar, and Kylian Mbappe. Signing the best players in the world brings about a high level of expectation as very few clubs have the same level of resources as the French champions.

Despite investing in such players and dominating the Ligue 1 Champions League success has alluded the French giants. The closest they have come was in 2020 when they lost a close game 1-0 to Bayern Munich.

2. They have not won the Champions League

As successful as PSG has been domestically they have had limited success in Europe. Last year was the best chance they had as the Borussia Dortmund was a winnable tie on paper and in a one-off game against Real Madrid they could easily nick a 1-0 win. Not winning the Champions League is seen as a failure as the owners were brought here to win that trophy.
