Paris Saint-Germain have kicked off the season on the right foot, maintaining an unbeaten run in the French league with four wins in four matches, scoring an impressive 16 goals in those games.

With the same energy, PSG are looking to start their European campaign strong in their upcoming clash against Girona on Wednesday, 18th September, for the first matchday of the UEFA Champions League group stage.

One of PSG's standout players this season, as well as last, is Frenchman Ousmane Dembele, who joined the club in the summer of 2023. Dembele might be the only untouchable player for Luis Enrique at PSG.

While the Spanish coach has often stated that no one is indispensable and that everyone can play, the stats suggest otherwise when it comes to Dembele. Despite receiving criticism, particularly last season, Dembele has made the most of his opportunities, and today, as mentioned earlier, he is one of the most crucial players in the Parisian squad.

So much so that he now shares the spotlight with Manchester City’s superstar Erling Haaland, at least in this latest statistical achievement. The website WhoScored.com revealed that both Dembele and Haaland currently lead the list of players from Europe's top five leagues who have received the most Player of the Match awards, as awarded by the platform itself.

Both Dembele and Haaland have three WhoScored Player of the Match awards to their name, cementing their status as two of the standout players in Europe’s biggest leagues.

It might come as a surprise to some that Dembele is having such a major impact at PSG, especially after last season when it was clear that his decision-making and finishing weren’t as efficient.

However, this season he seems to be a more mature player, having refined these two aspects of his game. We know Dembele is no longer a young prospect, he’s already 27 years old, so some might think that 'el mosquito' is what he is and won't improve much further. Yet this season, Luis Enrique has shown us that even veteran players (in quotes, since Dembele is still in his twenties) always have room to grow.
