PSG begin their UEFA Champions League campaign at home to La Liga side Girona. The Spanish side should not be taken lightly as last season they were one of the surprise packages of European football.
Prior to last season, nobody in Spain or the continent expected Girona to secure Champions League football despite the fact that Girona is part of the City Football Group ownership.
Here at PSG Post we discuss why PSG have to start strongly in this campaign's edition.
Why PSG need to send out a message against Girona
They have tough UEFA Champions League fixtures
The French champions were given one of the toughest eight games under the new league format. Some of their fixtures include Man City (home), Bayern Munich (away), Arsenal (away) and Atletico Madrid (home).
This is without including the upcoming game against Europe's surprise package Girona which makes it more imperative for them to win their opening game. Luis Enrique will find playing catch-up daunting with those fixtures.
They will be taken more seriously by their European counterparts
Les Parisiens have got rid of Kylian Mbappe, Lionel Messi, and Neymar in recent summer transfer windows. Whilst getting rid of those players means the team has no egos, clubs across the continent may not fear PSG as much as they have done in previous seasons as there isn't a name they feel they should be fearful of.
The French champions can prove they are a great side without Kylian Mbappe with an empathic victory against the Gironistes. A big margin of victory could easily send shock waves around Europe.
Although Girona may be seen as one of the weaker teams that PSG will face in this new phase of the Champions League, it is crucial to start on the right foot, as the first match sets the tone for the rest of the fixtures in this stage.
