PSG's star wingers Desiré Doué and Ousmane Dembélé were both among the goals as PSG romped to a comfortable 7-2 Champions League victory over Bayer Leverkusen. Both of the players had recently returned from injury, with this being Ballon D'or winner Dembélé's first appearance since he was crowned the best player in the world at the Ballon D'Or ceremony last month.
Doué started the game, as PSG and Leverkusen were both reduced to ten men in the first half. The 20-year-old went on to score a first half brace, with the second goal being particularly impressive, a controlled finish into the far corner after a powerful run. It represented his first goals in the Champions League since his brace in last season's final, which was also his last appearance in the competition. Later in the game, with PSG cruising, Dembélé was introduced, and also found himself on the scoresheet after rounding the Leverkusen goalkeeper and applying a finish.
This represents a glorious evening of football for Luis Enrique and his side, who once again demonstrate an improvement in European competition as opposed to domestically, having only drawn in last Friday's home game to Strasbourg. It also means that PSG kick off their Champions League campaign with three successive wins, as PSG sit atop the Champions League table, with nine points out of nine, and level on points with Inter Milan and Arsenal but ahead of goal difference.
The Parisians supporters will be further buoyed by both the free flowing football that they saw their side play last night's game - during which at times they looked unstoppable - and especially by the return of their attackers, after an injury crisis that slowed down their start to the season and caused some concern.
The Parisians will hope to kick on in the league over the next few weeks, helped by their returning stars, and to establish a dominant gap between themselves and the second placed side, so that they are able to rotate over the back half of the season, a strategy that was crucial in their European success last season.
Despite the emphatic scoreline, Enrique had some reservations in his post match press conference, in which he spoke about the game being strange: highlighting the fact that the defense was leaky, and the lack of discipline that saw Illia Zabarnyi get red-carded in the first half. However, Enrique also highlighted his team's ambition and ability to be resilient in the face of these slight difficulties. He also praised his side's traveling fans, who, as usual, were heard throughout.
Despite these small reservations, it was overall a fine night for the Parisians, who now look ahead to Saturday's game in which they travel to Brest, who currently sit twelfth in the table.
