Last summer, Luis Enrique and PSG surprisingly decided to recruit a left-back that would become Nuno Mendes' backup and quickly chose Lucas Digne. The 33-year-old France international seemed on paper to be a great option as he was coming off a great season with Unai Emery's Aston Villa, which was followed by a good 2026 World Cup with France that ended in the semi-final. Furthermore, Digne had the advantages to know the club perfectly as he had a first spell in Paris playing for the club between 2013 and 2015 and had an extensive experience of the highest level while only costing €10 million.
Therefore, everything on paper seemed to show that the former FC Barcelona would be a great pick up for the club which would also help Nuno Mendes rest when necessary or replace him comfortably if he were to get injured throughout the season.
However, this signing has already been questioned due to his performances on the pitch. Additionally, Luis Enrique appeared to have already lost trust in him as he only appeared in five games for the club out of the 12 played by the club so far this season, with Warren Zaire-Emery and Lucas Hernandez being preferred in some occasions.
Should Lucas Hernandez be the real second option at left-back?
When Digne was signed for the club this summer, many thought that Lucas Hernandez's tenure at the club could come to an end as he was Mendes' backup up to this point, but with Lucas Beraldo moving to a defensive midfielder role, the 2018 World Cup winner was moved to a backup centre-back role behind Willian Pacho.
However, when it was time to face Lamine Yamal and FC Barcelona in the Champions League earlier this week, Luis Enrique had a difficult choice on his hand with many expecting a rematch between Digne and Yamal after their encounter in the semi-finals of the 2026 Wrld Cup, but the Spaniard tactician chose Lucas Hernandez to defend on the Spanish prodigy.
This choice was definitely the right one as Hernandez delivered an incredible performance against Barcelona, scoring PSG's second goal on the night while massively reducing Yamal's influence on the game until his replacement by Warren Zaire-Emery late in the second half.
Digne's second tenure is not off to a great start and now many would hope to see Hernandez become the second option behind Nuno Mendes while the Portuguese recover from his injury.
