Paris Saint-Germain started their journey of Champions League title defense in emphatic fashion, absolute domination over Atalanta with a 4-0 win at Parc des Princes. Scoreline screams story of dominance, but this wasn't only show of raw talent. Luis Enrique's side executed tactical masterclass that suffocated the Italians from start to finish.

Three key adjustments in approach of this game made all the difference.

1. Ruthless press and an early breakthrough

PSG wasted no time in setting the pace and asserting control. From the opening whistle, they've pressed with purpose Atalanta's back line, they were aggressive, ruthless, refusing to let them settle into their usual high-tempo build-up play. Just three minutes in, captain Marquinhos pounced on loose sequence, played quick exchange with Fabian Ruiz and finished clinically.

This goal was more than opening goal, it was a statement. Goal shattered Atalanta's rhytm. Atalanta, a side that thrives on confidence and vertical movement suddenly found themselves chasing shadows, which turned out to be fatal. PSG's high press turned out to be more than Atalanta could handle as it led to chances, but also drained visitors mentally.

2. Exploiting Atalanta’s flanks with pace and width

Atalanta has been side that is known for leaving space in wide areas, Enrique knew this as well, so he designed PSG's attack to exploit and punish exactly those spaces.  Khvicha Kvaratskhelia was just electric. His long-range strike just before halftime double lead they had, but apart from goal, his contstant threat with dribbles and intelligent movement tore open Atalanta's right side.

Other side was attacked by Nuno Mendes, who provided perfect balance of defensive stability and attacking rush. His goal early in second half came from classic overlap that he has done many times where he would pin Atalanta back with surging runs. With force to exploit flanks and pushing wing-backs deep, PSG disrupted Atalanta's transitions, neutralizing one of their most powerful weapons.

3. Depth and in-game management

Luis Enrique, apart from being brilliant tactician, also knows his substitutions are as important as his starting plan. With match already approaching his latter stages, he has decided to introduce new players. One of them being Gonçalo Ramos, who sealed the victory for Parisians with a stoppage-time strike. Portuguese striker's impact highlighted PSG's luxury of depth, while Atalanta does not have same option. Atalanta was struggling to adapt, while PSG kept applying pressure with fresh legs.

Moments before halftime, Bradley Barcola missed penalty and it could've easily been a switch to break momentum, but instead team responded with composure, showing signs of maturity that has often bee questioned in PSG sides of the past. This PSG teams has beautiful mix of youth and experience, flair and leaders as they've demonstrated that last night.

A complete message to Europe

Last night reigning champions delivered a message. They brought a statement with their game, as they've looked sharper, hungrier and more tactically versatile than ever before. Balance of youth and experience was bright as day, where Marquinhos dominated defence, youthful midfield duo dictated tempo and Kvaratskhelia brought unpredictability.

Atalanta, on the other hand, team that is normally fearless in Europe, looked lost in Paris last night. They weren't able to cope with PSG's press, width and depth as it just shows how dangerous Enrique's side can be when it clicks.

As for PSG, the story goes on. This performance was more than three points, it's proof that their Champions League triumpf in 2025 wasn't one-off fairy tale. With Enrique's tactical mind all over this performance, the Parisians look determined to dominate the continent again and again.
