Last night, Paris Saint-Germain was stunned by Copa Libertadores winners Botafogo 1-0 in their second Club Wolrd Cup game, thanks to a goal from Igor Jesus. It was their first defeat in their last six outings as some key players were rested at the start of the game.
Here are the three main takeaways from PSG's loss against Botafogo in the FIFA Club World Cup group stage.
3 key takeaways from PSG's Club World Cup loss
1. PSG still master of their destiny
Following their shock defeat against Brazilian side Botafogo in Matchday 2 of the FIFA Club World Cup group stage, Luis Enrique and his players are sitting at the second spot of Group B with three points behind their latest opponents.
Ahead of their last group game, the European champions will need to secure a win if they are to punch their ticket for the knockout stage of the tournament while hoping that Diego Simeone's Atlético Madrid who defeated the Seattle Sounders in their last game fail to defeat Botafogo.
Nonetheless, if both European sides were to end the group stage level on points, Paris would automatically qualify due to their win against the Colchoneros in their clash.
2. Botafogo played a perfect defensive game
Despite dominating the game in terms of ball possession (75% ball possession) and chances created (16 shots), Luis Enrique and his side lost to a very well-organised Botafogo side that managed to making incredibly ahrd for PSG to build their plays as they were used to.
The team failed to create clear cut chances as they only had two shots on target while the Brazilian side defended their box well (eight blocked shots), forcing Paris to take the majority of their shots from outside the box (9-out-of-16). The European champions were never at ease in this game and were certainly the side that defended the Parisians the best this season according to Luis Enrique:
"It is ceratinly the best team we faced this season. We had difficulties to create chances. It was complicated, we were not inspired offensively up front." (DAZN)
3. The team is missing Ousmane Dembélé
Last night, as Paris Saint-Germain failed to score and lost to Copa Libertadores winners Botafogo who put in an impressive defensive display, the absence of Ousmane Dembélé was heavily felt by the fans and on the pitch.
While the 27-year-old forward is sidelined after the thigh injury sustained with France, Gonçalo Ramos has become a starter and as since failed to deliver a top performances in their first two Club World Cup games.
Unfortunately, the Portuguese striker who had a lot of pressure to shine as a starter has had little to no real impact against a great defence and was replaced by Bradley Barcola 10 minutes inside the second half. With Dembélé still expected to miss PSG's last group game against Seattle Sounders on June 23rd, Luis Enrique may look to other players to start as their number 9.
