Christopher Nkunku is a name that has been on the list of a few clubs amidst the January transfer window chaos. The French international has struggled so far this season for Chelsea scoring two goals and notching one assist in 18 league appearances, mostly off the bench. Despite interest from clubs around Europe the 27 year old has four years left of his contract which expires in June 2024 making any deal for the attacker difficult.
Despite having a difficult season with Chelsea his time as a whole at the club hasn't been too bad as the 27 year old has scored 15 goals in 41 games since joining them in 2023. Here at PSG Post we discuss why the French champions should take a gamble on the attacking midfielder.
He will play with some of his international teammates
If Nkunku joins Les Parisens then he will play with the players he knows from international duty with France. He will play alongside Randal Kolo Muani(if he ends up staying), Bradley Barcola and Ousmane Dembele which will benefit all of them because of the chemistry they would have built up representing Les Bleus. This news could also do Didier Deschamps the world of good as they will have a better understanding of each other's game.
He can reignite his career at his old club
Nkunku has not had the best of seasons with Chelsea under Enzo Maresca. As alluded to previously he has scored two goals in 18 league appearances this season with most of his appearances coming off the bench . This is remarkable as he proved what he is capable of in the Bundesliga with Leipzig. In the 21/22 season he scored 20 goals and got 15 assists in 34 league games and in his last season (2022/23) with Red Bull owned club he scored 16 goals and got six assists in 25 appearances. One of his biggest issues at Chelsea has been the fact he has been plagued with injuries.
Nkunku fits into Luis Enrique's system
Enrique usually deploys a 4-3-3 but could also choose a 4-2-3-1 formation. Nkunku can play in the number 10 position, out wide or upfront as he is a very versatile player. Enzo Moresca has opted for a 4-2-3-1 formation recently so the 27 year old will have no problem adapting to the formation under Luis Enrique. The only question is what position will he play at PSG as his flexibility brings about a conundrum.
