Les Parisiens last two seasons were the greatest in the club's history. In the season that just ended, PSG retained the Champions League and won the league. This is an impressive feat, as two seasons ago they won a treble, an achievement which hadn't been done before in French football history. Enrique did well to motivate his players to win the Champions League again after winning the treble. The European champions could have won another treble if they had beaten local rivals Paris FC in the Coupe de France. Here at PSG Post, we discuss why Luis Enrique could go down as PSG's greatest coach thus far.
Why Luis Enrique could go down as PSG's greatest ever coach?
Previous managers had not won PSG the Champions League
Luis Enrique became the first manager in the club's history to win the Champions League two seasons ago. This shouldn't be brushed aside, as quality managers such as Carlo Ancelotti, Unai Emery, and Thomas Tuchel have fallen short on the European stage. This was the trophy that they have wanted the most since the takeover in 2011, as they have dominated the domestic scene in France. They ditched their old model of buying superstars such as Neymar, Lionel Messi, and Kylian, who played as individuals, for trusting their youth.
The treble will be a difficult feat to top
Before the 2024-25 season, no French club had won the treble. The closest someone had come was Marseille in 1992/3, who won the league and Champions League but fell short in the Coupe de France quarter finals. Outside of France, big clubs such as Liverpool, Juventus, AC Milan, Real Madrid, and Arsenal have not won the treble. Arsenal is the only club mentioned that hasn't won the Champions League. This illustrates the difficulty of winning the treble. It is hard to imagine another manager winning the treble, as it isn't an easy feat to achieve.
In the modern era, only one manager has retained the Champions League
Since the rebrand in 1992, the only team that has retained the Champions League aside from PSG is Real Madrid. The Spanish giants three-peated between 2017 and 2019 under Zinedine Zidane. To put this into context, the great Barcelona teams under Pep Guardiola and the Man United teams under Sir Alex Ferguson failed to retain the Champions League. This shows the magnitude of the achievement, as teams have struggled to do it. It is scary to think that if PSG signs the correct profile of players, they could win the tournament for a third time in a row.
