Why Lucas Chevalier is the best goalkeeper for PSG in the long run?

Chevalier has failed to convince fans and observers since joining PSG this summer.

Despite being one of the most divisive goalkeeper and received many criticism throughout his time at the club, Gianluigi Donnarumma delivered numerous incredible performances and played a key role as PSG claimed their first Champions League trophy as well as their first treble last season.

However, Luis Enrique surprisingly decided to push the Italian shot-stopper out of the door to bring Lille's goalkeeper, Lucas Chevalier, a ball-playing goalkeeper able to fit perfectly to his ideal playstyle. Though many agreed that Chevalier's potential was impressive, some were shocked that a keeper who was at the heart of Paris' greatest season was easily shown the door. Which undoubtedly put more pressure on the Frenchman's shoulder. However, the Spaniard stated before the season that he would be happy to concede more goals if it meant that his goalkeeper was a perfect fit to his ideal playstyle.

Why PSG should not worry about Chevalier's performances?

After 17 games with the European Champions, Chevalier has failed to make a lasting positive impression with many now regretting the departure of Gianluigi Donnarumma who is currently impressing with Pep Guardiola's Manchester City. Though, his ball-playing ability is indredible and is already important for his side's build-up and will undoubtedly improve PSG's on-ball dominance in the near future. Moreover, little to no goalkeeper in Europe are as good with the ball as him making him almost the perfect fit for this playstyle.

While his shot-stopping abilities are not on par yet with Donnarumma, the former Lille player has proved in Ligue 1 and in Europe that he was a very good prospect, ready to play on the biggest stage. However, at the moment, his performance do not reflect what he should be capable to do at this level. Additionally, the 24-year-old has already made costly mistakes with PSG in high-profile games against Marseille in Le Classique or more recently against Lyon last weekend.

Despite his few mistakes from Chevalier, Luis Enrique and his team are sitting at the top of the league and are on their way to qualify for the next round of the Champions League while being plagued with key players injuries. More will be expected from Lucas Chevalier after joining what is one of the most dominant teams in Europe, but fans should be more patient with the French international in his first season at a top club. Lucas Chevalier will undoubtedly grow into his role as he gains more experience and fans shouldn't forget that they had the same doubt with Donnarumma ahead of his six amazing months that led to a treble with PSG.
