The Ballon d'Or ceremony took place on Monday 22nd September 2025. It was a brilliant night for the French champions as five players who were part of the treble winning season (Nuno Mendes, Gianluigi Donnarumma, Achraf Hakimi, Vitinha and Ousmane Dembélé) made the top 10 for the Ballon d'or voting. One of the biggest talking points was whether Lamine Yamal should have had more votes than Ousmane Dembélé.
This comes after his father said on the Spanish TV show 'El Chiringuito':
''Something very strange happened here... my son is the best player in the world''. To make matters worse he added: ''The next year is ours''. The quotes took many football fans across the globe by surprise as it was very petulant.
Here at PSG Post we discuss why Lamine Yamal's father was wrong to come out with that statement in the aftermath of the Balon D'or ceremony.
Why Lamine Yamal's father was wrong on Dembélé and his Ballon d'Or?
Ousmane Dembélé deserved the award
To say Dembele deserved to win the award would be an understatement. He was the best player for the club that went on to win a treble. Last season he scored 32 goals and recorded 12 assists in 48 games. How well he is playing should not come as a surprise to anyone as he was seen as more talented then Kylian Mbappe earlier on in his career. Mbappe's departure from the club gave him more freedom to flourish as he can now take on some of the goalscoring burden. Whilst the French captain was at the club everything went through him .Injuries has stopped Dembele taking the next step whilst he was at Borussia Dortmund and Barcelona.
It puts Lamine Yamal under more pressure
People's expectation of Yamal will sky rocket following his father's comments. Prior to his father's comments there was already pressure on him to live up to the hype of being the next Lionel Messi for this current generation. Yamal is on the right trajectory but he is not the finished article yet as he still has to work on his finishing. Last season he had only scored nine league goals. The 18 year old's main strength is his ability to create for others. In the previous campaign he registered 16 assists in 48 games.
Raphinha arguably had a better season then him
Fans across the globe can make a strong case for Raphinha being better then Yamal last season. Whilst Yamal has more potential the Brazilian international is playing the best football of his career. His game has gone up a few levels since his time at Leeds United in the Premier League. Last campaign he had scored 31 goals and registered 17 assists in 50 games. This is rather remarkable considering he had not hit double digits for goals in the league for Barcelona before last season.
