Gianluigi Donnarumma has been a topic of discussion lately. He has been linked with a move away from the club as the club can't agree on a contract extension with the Italian international. Donnarumma is demanding a salary that's too high, and it doesn't fit into the player pay scale. This is an issue, as he has one year left on his contract, and Luis Enrique isn't satisfied with his aerial ability and footwork. As a result, PSG is taking the initiative to sign a keeper in Lucas Chevalier, who is good with his feet.
Here at PSG Post, we discuss why he should stay at the club for the foreseeable future.
Why PSG should fight to keep Donnarumma ?
He is great at saving penalties
Donnarumma is one of the best goalkeepers at saving penalties. The most notable instance of this was when England played Italy in the Euro 2020 final. He saved penalties in the shootout from Jadon Sancho and Bukayo Saka as Italy were crowned European champions for the second time in their history. This led to him being named the player of the tournament. The 26-year-old came up clutch again in a penalty shootout when PSG took Liverpool to penalties. He saved penalties from Darwin Nunez and Curtis Jones to ensure the French champions progressed to the quarter-finals.
He is one of the best shot stoppers in the world
The Italian international is brilliant at saving shots. This is crucial in the Champions League when the French champions have to play against opposition that has several shots. The second leg of the semi-final of the Champions League against Arsenal springs to mind when we think of games where he stamped his authority. When PSG hosted Arteta's side, he made an instinctive save from Gabriel Martinelli's close-range shot, got a hand to Martin Odegaard's fierce low effort, and denied Bukayo Saka with a fingertip save. If he were not in goal, then they could have been knocked out of the tournament before the final.
Donnarumma is just 26
The PSG goalkeeper has not yet reached his prime, as he is only 26 years old. He can only get better, as goalkeepers tend to peak around 31 years old and have a longer career in the game. It will be extremely hard to find a replacement for him, as the goalkeepers better than him are not for sale. Lucas Chevalier has potential, but it remains to be seen how he will perform at a club like PSG, as the pressure will be different. The French goalkeeper will also have to face fewer shots on goal, so he will need an even higher level of concentration.
