PSG are coming off the back of a great 24/25 season, which culminated in them winning a treble. They followed that up by just falling short in the final hurdle of the Club World Cup. They lost 3-0 to a Chelsea side that wanted it more on the day.
Enzo Maresca got his tactics spot on. He left space on Nuno Mendes' side of the pitch, which gave Cole Palmer and others freedom to roam around the field. This result can be seen as a blessing in disguise, as they can't get complacent next season. They also know they need to improve their squad in this transfer window. Here at PSG Post, we discuss the areas of the squad that need strengthening.
Back-up left back
PSG needs a fullback who is capable of challenging Nuno Mendes for a place in the starting eleven. Lucas Hernandez is a good option to have, but he has been injury-prone throughout his career. This is not ideal, as if Mendes is tired or injured, nobody can step up in his absence. They had the opportunity to obtain the service of a quality left-back in the shape of Theo Hernandez. Hernandez would have been a great option as he starts for the France national team and has good company in the shape of his brother Lucas Hernandez. The only issue with that signing would be if he becomes disgruntled with a lack of playing time.
Back up right back
Achraf Hakimi had one of the best seasons we have ever seen from a right back. Offensively, he was a powerhouse. The Moroccan international scored 11 goals and registered 16 assists in 55 games last campaign. Very few right-backs in world football can match that level of output. Les Parisiens need a better backup option at right back than Yoram Zague. Zague has potential, but it is unlikely that he will reach Hakimi's level in his career. They will need a reliable backup option at right back as Hakimi will be going to the AFCON with Morocco in the winter.
Center-back alongside Pacho or Marquinhos
The French champions could do with another center-back, as Presnel Kimpembe has proven to be unreliable, and Lucas Beraldo showed his inexperience in the Club World Cup final against Chelsea. The Brazilian struggled to contain Cole Palmer and João Pedro throughout the 90 minutes. He did not stake a good claim for a place in the starting eleven ahead of Willian Pacho. Lucas Hernandez is another option at centre back, but he is injury-prone like Kimpembe.
