Paris Saint-Germain made the trip to Brittany to face Stade Rennais at the Roazhon Park for the Ligue 1 opener, a game that was initially set to take place at the Parc des Princes. The fixture was reversed due to the poor condition of the pitch, leading to controversy between the two sides about the return game.
Ahead of this game, the Parisians played two friendlies and two finals in the UEFA Super Cup against Villa, which ended with a 2-1 win and a 1-0 loss in the Trophée des Champions against RC Lens. The back-to-back Champions League winners will therefore look to bounce back from this result.
Despite several signings, Luis Enrique opted only for players at the club last season in the starting lineup. Lucas Hernandez is set to start at left-back following Nuno Mendes' red card in their last game against Lens, while Warren Zaire-Emery was preffered to 2026 World Cup winner Fabian Ruiz. Furthermore, Ousmane Dembélé starts his first game of the campaign.
Paris Saint-Germain's starting XI: Safonov; Marquinhos, Pacho, L. Hernandez, Hakimi; Warren Zaire-Emery, Vitinha, Joao Neves; Kvaratskhelia, Dembélé, Doué.
Stade Rennais' starting XI: Samba; Cresswell, Abdelhamid Ait Boudlal, Frankowski, Nagida; Rongier, Thomasson, Szymanski; Al-Taamari, Lepaul; Soumaré.
Ferran Torres' brace rescue a point for PSG against Rennes in Ligue 1 opener
Both teams started the game with a lot of intensity with Rennes being the first side to make an attempt on goal through Al-Taamari with a long range effort just wide of Safonov's goal, just one minute into the game. His chance was quickly answered by Warren Zaire-Emery's own long range strike with the same result.
Rennes took the lead inside nine minute thanks to a wonderful strike from Szymanski follwing a well-run counterattack. The Parisians found themselves exposed way too easily on this break as the home advantage appeared in full effect in the opening 10 minutes of the clash.
Just before the break, Ousmane Dembélé squandered what was PSG's biggest chance of the half from close range and his side paid a heavy price for it when Esteban Lepaul doubled the hosts' lead just seconds later (38').
After the break, Luis Enrique made two changes hoping to overturn the result, taking off both Kvaratskhelia and Ousmane Dembélé for Ferran Torres and Mika Godts who are both making their debut for the club.
Warren Zaire-Emery missed a golden chance from point-blank range as PSG pushed to come back into the game at the start of the second half. But the hope of a comeback was reignited by new PSG signing Ferran Torres who pulled one back to score his first goal for the club (70').
In the dying embers of the game, Torres grabbed a brace with a well-placed header that left Samba motionless (83').
