PSG’s under 19s crashed out on penalties against Real Madrid in the UEFA youth league last night, drawing 1-1 in normal time before losing 5-4 in the shootout. The sides were meeting in the Youth League semi final, and were playing in Lausanne, Switzerland.
PSG bow out of the Youth League on penalties against Real Madrid
The ‘titis’ started the game under a barrage of constant pressure from their Spanish opponents, who dominated the early exchanges in the encounter. PSG shotstopper Martin James was called into action a few times over the course of the first 20 minutes, including one acrobatic sweeping headed clearance after an under hit backpass.
PSG did start to grow back into the game however, as left winger Elijah Ly squandering two presentable opportunities before curling a sublime shot into the top corner. PSG grew into the match at this point, with the French side missing further opportunities to extend their lead before the break, with Madrid goalkeeper Javier Navarro also being called into action.
The second half proved more even, as both sides could have scored before the 83rd minute, when Real Madrid broke through to score the equaliser, as substitute Liberto Navascues slotted the ball home from the edge of the box, through a crowd of bodies – with the PSG goalkeeper clearly unsighted. With the two sides then level heading towards the full time whistle, PSG could have won the game right at the death as Rayan Abo El Nay was denied in the dying embers of the game by an inspired save by Navarro.
The game then went directly to penalties, which saw PSG lose in the cruellest of circumstances, as Real Madrid missed two of their first three penalties, only to come back to win 5-4 after misses from Aymen Assab, Yanis Khafi and Emmanuel Mbemba, all of whom had their spot kicks saved by the excellent Navarro in goal for Los Blancos.
It’s a cruel defeat for the young Parisians, whose European journey this season now comes to an end, but it was a brave and spirited performance never the less from the French side, and fans of the Parisian club will have been delighted to see them compete against one of Europe’s best at youth level, especially after the recent influx of excellent and accomplished academy players into the PSG first team in recent seasons. Indeed, Luis Enrique will have had an eye on the proceedings last night and will perhaps be considering the possibility of promotion to the first team for some of the standout performers in the game.
