PSG have had an excellent two weeks: having strung together four positive results in a row: two of which have come against opponents who looked set to provide a stern challenge on paper: Manchester City and Barcelona, but who in fact were relatively comfortably dispatched in the Champions League by PSG. The Parisians now have to turn their attention back to domestic affairs, which in this case means Sunday night’s game against Lyon.

PSG set for massive Ligue 1 clash against Lyon

Lyon have had a strong start to the season, and are currently level with PSG on points at the top of the Ligue 1 table. The Lyonnais, coached by Paulo Fonseca, formerly of Milan and of Lille, have had a good start to their domestic season but will go into Sunday’s game after an extremely sobering result at the hands of Hoffenheim, who routed Lyon 3-0 in the Europa League last night. This result with give PSG confidence that Sunday’s game will be the perfect moment to dispatch Lyon as contenders to their throne: Fonseca’s men, of course, will enter the clash as severe underdogs, despite their fine
start to the domestic season.

PSG’s own mood, which should be triumphant after their big midweek win, will be slightly marred by the number of injuries to key players that they picked up in that game against Barcelona. Khvicha Kvaratskhelia was the headline of course, rupturing his ACL and thus most likely missing the remainder of the season, but Ousmane Dembélé and Marquinhos will also miss a few games after the knocks they picked up in the high intensity clash against the Catalan outfit.

PSG will therefore be without a number of key players against Lyon, with their attack in particular looking severely depleted, although if Desiré Doué continues his recent form into that game, PSG will be at an advantage from the start, with the French starlet scoring in each of his last three games for the club across all all competitions. Given the absences of Kvaratskhelia and Dembélé, new signings such as Maghnes Akliouche and Ferran Torres will most likely be a chance to impress from the start by Luis Enrique.

The recent history between the two sides makes promising reading for the Parisians, who have won seven of the last ten clashes between the two sides, drawing one and losing two (including the last time the two sides met, back in mid-April). One less promising side for the French Champions is
that each of their last three defeats to Lyon has come at the Parc des Princes: a discouraging streak they will hope does not extend on Sunday.
