This weekend was a good one across the board for Paris St Germain. After they got off to the best possible start with their win 3-0 on Saturday away at Brest, their mood will have been even further improved by Marseille's away defeat to Lens. This combination of results meant that PSG return to the top of the table, having previously slipped behind their Le Classique rivals after successive league draws.
PSG look to keep their winning form going
PSG are now top of the table with 20 points, one point clear of surprise team Lens, who have got off to a fine start this season, spearheaded by the veteran Florian Thauvin. The Parisians go into tonight's game against Lorient hoping to get a second consecutive away win that would see them pull away from their competition atop the French top flight.
Their newly promoted opponents tonight have had a difficult start to the season, and head into the game languishing in 16th place, the relegation play off spot. They have, however, already recorded some surprisingly big wins this season, especially at home, comfortably beating Monaco at the Stade de Moustoir back in late September. PSG will have to be cautious then, and not take anything for granted: their league form has been far from perfect this season, and it would be foolish to underestimate any side at this point in time.
More good news for the Parisians is the continuous return of more of their players from injury, with Fabian Ruiz now the only starter to be unavailable. Marquinhos, Ousmane Dembélé and Desiré Doué (the last of whom has now scored three goals in his last two games) are all back and available after their recent injury woes, something that PSG manager Luis Enrique had underlined in the pre match press conference as being a source of relief.
He also once again emphasized the importance of the 'titis' - the youth team players who can come into the team and contribute. Senny Mayulu, Ibrahim Mbaye and Quentin Ndjantou are three of the players who have properly broken through this season, the first two of whom have become almost established starters in the midst of PSG's injury issues. PSG fans will be delighted at having a manager who isn't afraid to integrate academy starlets, after academy graduates like Kingsley Coman and Christopher Nkunku were snatched by other teams in the past, after having not been given much game time in Paris.
Enrique also highlighted the tactical and positional versatility of some of the squad's players, stating that it was something he saw in the majority of PSG's team, something positive for him as a coach.
After tonight's game, PSG have a couple of home fixtures: first on Saturday against Nice, and then a big European clash against German giants Bayern Munich next Tuesday, in a repeat of the 2020 Champions League final.
