QSI exploring bid for PSG franchise in NBA Europe
Since taking over Paris Saint-Germain in 2011, QSI have tried to established themselves and the club as a global brand. The project started by Nasser Al-Khelaifi and the investors has always extended much further than football with the club owning a Judo, Handball and Esports teams.
Qatar Sports Investments and Nasser Al-Khelaifi have proved that they were able to lead other projects with their successful handball, judo and Esports teams.
It is therefore no surprise if the club is now interested in joining NBA Europe and expand their influence. Nasser Al-Khelaifi and PSG have had a notable partnership with the Jordan Brand and Kevin Durant for years now. The NBA superstar who is currently playing for the Houston Rockets has a minority investment stake in PSG and has in the past expressed interest in helping develop basketball project connected to the club.
Additionally, many over clubs have also well-known basketball teams like Real Madrid and Barcelona whose teams are iconic teams stakeholder of the EuroLeague.
Nonetheless, PSG are not guarenteed a spot as they will need to bid for their spot with many other group looking to invest in NBA Europe. To realise their project, QSI will likely have to takeover an existing basketball team such as Paris Basketball or Levallois. They will need to submit their proposal to NBA Europe by March 31st, however, negotiations are expected to last around a year between the organisation and all the bidders.
The project should be officialised after this date following a meeting between all the NBA owners and stakeholders. This will offer more clarity to all the teams looking to start a franchise with the upcoming NBA Europe.
