PSG 6-1 Slovan Bratislava: Torres nets dominant hattrick as PSG rout Slovan Bratislava

PSG had suffered a poor start to the season in Ligue 1 this season, but that was temporarily forgotten tonight as they put in a sumptuous display against Slovak opposition Slovan Bratislava, winning 6-1 with new summer acquisition Ferran Torres netting a dominant hat-trick.

Ousmane Dembélé was also back on top form for PSG after a poor individual start to the season for man who is still the current Ballon D’or holder. PSG fans will have been delighted to see him score twice in the opening 25 minutes; his first a cool rebound from Nuno Mendes’s strike and his second a simple header, with both goals looking like the type of instinctive finishes that Dembélé has added to his game in recent years.

The Frenchman himself will be relieved to have ended a streak in which his finishing had been poor (his brace tonight were his first goals in any competition since the World Cup). Dembélé turned provider shortly later to set up Torres first, before the Spaniard added a second just after half time after some fine work from fellow new arrival Maghnes Akliouche.

PSG’s opponents, managed by former Manchester City midfielder Yaya Touré, were truly no match for a side that has dominated far better European outfits over the last couple of seasons in the Champions League, and the Slovak team’s misery was compounded moments later when Torres lashed in his third of the night. Slovan’s Suleiman Camara pulled one back but it proved little more than meaningless consolation and Fabian Ruiz went on to lash in a sixth goal a few minutes before the end of the game.

It was a much improved performance from PSG, who had of course failed to win any of their first three league games after a disappointing defeat to Lens in the Trophée des Champions. For the first time this season, the Parisian’s dominance on the ball and continued chance creation translated to goals, as the French league Champions took an impressive 32 shots over 90 minutes, constantly peppering Slovan’s goal throughout the game.

One standout performer was Dro Fernandez, who perhaps surprisingly was trusted by Luis Enrique to play 90 minutes in midfield ahead of Joao Neves or Warren Zaire Emery: the young Spaniard certainly seemed to add a more silky and creative dimension to the middle three for PSG, and was heavily involved in the buildup to Dembélé’s second goal. Akliouche will also be pleased with having played the 90 minutes, and put in what was by far his best performance so far in a PSG shirt.

As for Torres, he’ll come away with the match ball, with these three goals adding to the two that he had previously scored on his debut, in a 2-2 comeback against Rennes.

PSG now look ahead to this weekend’s game, a trip to Brest in which they will be hoping to secure their first domestic win of the season.
