Manchester United seem set to finally land their dream target after agreeing a £42.2 million fee for defensive midfielder Manuel Ugarte. The price could rise to £50 million depending on performance-related add-ons. The move for the Uruguayan international accelerated after Napoli agreed a deal for Scott Mc Tominay. Here at PSG Post, we discuss why the French champions will regret selling him this season.
Why Manuel Ugarte leaving PSG is significant
Ugarte has great attributes
Ugarte's a midfield destroyer who can break up play thanks to his great reading of the game and reasonable positioning. This enables him to provide excellent protection to the back four. He also presses and loves a tackle making him excellent defensively.
The only fault in his game is that he is the standard "get the ball and hand it off to a more technically gifted player" type which didn't fit Enrique's system. Despite this, his departure is a blow as defensively I'm not sure you could find anyone better on the market right now. Ugarte will be brilliant for Erik Ten Hag's side as they need someone who could replace the ageing Casemiro.
The French champions squad could get weaker
With the departure of Ugarte to Man United as well as the potential transfers of Nordi Mukiele to Leverkusen, Skriniar to Al Nassar, and Carlos Soler to West Ham Las Parisens squad depth could get significantly weaker. While this may not be a problem in the league given the gulf in quality between PSG and the rest of the competition it could prove to be costly when they have to play one of the better teams in the Champions League.
