With the 2022/23 season over and already a few days in the rearview mirror, it's time to reflect on the year that was around Paris Saint-Germain. During the next few days, we'll review the years of all PSG players, from the reserve goalie to the last striker by way of all defenders and midfielders, here at PSG Post.
Kylian Mbappe - 2022/23 Season Review
Mbappe appeared in 34 Ligue 1 matches, starting in 32 of them with an average playing time of 83 minutes per game.
His attacking prowess was as good as ever, as he fearlessly faced opponents, scoring a league-leading 29 goals. His goal-scoring frequency was impeccable, finding the back of the net every 97 minutes, pretty much once per game. Mbappe averaged 4.4 shots per game, forcing opposition goalkeepers into action, with 2.3 shots on target per match.
Although he missed 28 big chances, his overall goal conversion rate stood at an impressive 19%. Mbappe's precision was not limited to free kicks, as he converted none from the single opportunity he had. Most of his 29 goals were struck from inside the box, with 26 out of 114 attempts finding the mark, while 3 out of 35 came from outside the box. A single-headed goal, coupled with 6 goals from his left foot and 22 from his right, demonstrated his versatility in finding different avenues to score.
Beyond his scoring prowess, Mbappe also showed good passing skills. He provided 5 assists to his teammates, while his expected assists stood at an impressive 9.37. His accurate passing per game was 31.5, boasting an 83% success rate. Whether in his own half or the opposition's, Mbappe showcased his precision, with 91% and 79% accuracy respectively.
While he predominantly shone in attacking roles, Mbappe displayed glimpses of defensive prowess. He made interceptions and tackles steadily, albeit at a relatively modest rate. His abilities to win possession and dribble past opponents were commendable, with 0.6 possessions won and 2.2 successful dribbles per game.
Mbappe wrapped up his Ligue 1 season getting named Best Player of the Year for the fourth time in a row, to go with a fifth consecutive top-goalscorer award in Ligue 1 after outperforming Lyon's Alexander Lacazette.
In the Champions League, Mbappe displayed his prowess by contributing to his team's victories through a good-not-great group stage that saw PSG finish in second place behind Benfica.
In a thrilling away match against Juventus, he scored a crucial goal and provided an assist, propelling his team to a 2-1 victory. The home encounter against Maccabi Haifa showcased Mbappe's brilliance as he scored two goals and assisted twice in a resounding 7-2 triumph. He continued his impressive form by scoring in the matches against Benfica and Haifa again, securing a draw and a win respectively.
As the tournament progressed to the Round of 16, Mbappe faced a challenge from Bayern Munich while coming off an injury. In the first leg, Mbappe couldn't find the back of the net and PSG suffered a narrow 1-0 defeat. The second leg proved to be an uphill battle as Bayern emerged victorious with a 2-0 scoreline, eliminating Mbappe's team from the tournament entirely.
