Neymar wins 2022 Samba d'Or award, sixth in his career

Neymar was named the winner of the Samba d'Or award for the 2022 year on Monday, winning the trophy for the third year in a row and for the sixth time through his career.

The award was created back in 2008 and it serves the purpose of recognizing the best Brazilian player playing in Europe. So far, Neymar is the most decorated player by a large marging having won six of the 15th awards handed to date.

The list of past winners is a murderer's row of world-renowned players: Kaka, Luis Fabiano, Maicon, Philippe Coutinho, Alisson Becker, Roberto Firmino, and former PSG defender Thiago Silva (x3) appear in the list of champions.

Neymar, now playing at the peak of his powers at 31 years of age, won the award in 2014, 2015, and 2017 before moving to Paris and then in 2020 and 2021 while already playing football at PSG. He's now added the 2022 edition of the award to his large resume of accolades and trophies.

Throughout 2022, Neymar had an impressive run of performances at club level playing 18 total games at PSG while scoring 12 and assisting 10 more goals on his way to helping PSG win their 10th Ligue 1 title since the club was established in 1970.

Neymar also played for Brazil at the 2022 Qatar World Cup, reaching the quarter-finals before crashing out of the competition without a chance to shoot a penalty kick in the shootout against Croatia. At the international tournament, Neymar logged 282 minutes of play while scoring two goals to tie Pele's all-time goalscoring record playing with Brazil's senior squad while also adding one assist to his tally.

Neymar is expected back at PSG for their game against Olympique Marseille on Wednesday, part of the French Cup Round of 16 matchups, after missing time nurturing the ankle injury he suffered at the World Cup.
