Paris Saint-Germain concluded a masterstroke when they allowed Xavi Simons to leave for free in 2022. The Dutchman signed with PSV Eindhoven, but secured a clause allowing PSG to re-purchase him for around €6 million.

Following his brilliant campaign in his home country, PSG did not hesitate to activate this clause and reacquire the player, but he was immediately loaned to RB Leipzig. In Germany, Simons continued to shine, and rumours quickly surfaced linking him with clubs of the calibre of Bayern Munich, FC Barcelona, Manchester United, or even a return to Paris.

However, after numerous rumours, Simons opted to return on loan, with no option to buy, to RB Leipzig last summer. The season has just begun but rumours are already multiplying, and it is in this context that it is worth mentioning recent information from Football Insider.

According to the cited source, Premier League giants Manchester City have made Xavi Simons one of their main transfer targets, aiming for him to succeed Kevin De Bruyne with the Citizens.

The Belgian star's contract is nearing expiry, and Simons appears to be a priority for Pep Guardiola's team. The same report also names Bayern Munich and Liverpool as interested.

At this pont, it is very difficult to predict Simons' future, but in my opinion, and perhaps an unpopular one, Simons did well to return to RB Leipzig. After so many changes, moving from Barcelona’s academy to PSG, then to PSV, and barely a year later to Germany, I believe what Simons needed was some stability.

I do not rule out a return to PSG in 2025, but with this level of interest, it would also be a good opportunity for the Parisian board to close the most expensive sale in the club’s history.
