Kylian Mbappe won't activate 2025 contract option forcing PSG to think about selling him
You can feel the shock around PSG after Kylian Mbappe sent a letter stating his desire not to extend his contract past June 2024, as revealed by L'Equipe.
PSG's response would be clear: renew the contract of the French striker as soon as possible (before August) or surrender and sell him this summer.
The saga around the future of Kylian Mbappe has just been brought back to life by the player himself and his entourage, according to the aforementioned outlet with an explosive report arriving late on Monday.
With a contract running until June 2024 and a player option attached to it to extend it until the end of the 2025 season, the Bondy native could have announced to PSG through a letter received by the club on Monday his formal desire not to activate the clause in question.
That, in turn, means that he will remain under contract until June 2024 but supposedly leave for free a summer from now. A big surprise within the club, as they intended to negotiate a long-term extension and they could have already entered initial conversations.
This letter felt like a bomb within PSG's headquarters and the entire club was surprised considering the striker had put an end to all the rumors about a potential exit from Paris at the end of May during the UNFP trophies.
Mbappe, however, had more than a month and a half ahead of him to think over his decision not to renew, since the option had a deadline of July 31, 2023. And even said clause would have been canceled on August 1 if Mbappe had not activated it. Therefore, it is the decision of the French striker to express his desire not to renew his contract.
PSG is open to the idea of selling Kylian Mbappe this summer
PSG responded, however, immediately with a clear line regarding this situation: they will try to renew Mbappe's contract, or they will sell him this summer. Because although the player took action only in mid-June, the transfer market is very long and many twists and turns can take place. Last summer, the Frenchman renewed before the transfer window, and then saw PSG sign a very disappointing summer in terms of signings.
In the coming weeks, if Mbappe does not show the slightest desire to extend his contract with PSG, then he would be put up for sale as Paris will refuse to lose their player for nothing.
That would mark a sharp change in attitude contrary to that of the summer of 2021 when the club had absolutely rejected all approaches from Real Madrid, even if that meant losing the player a year later as a free agent. A firmness that had paid off since Mbappe would finally renew a few months later when everything indicated that he was going to sign for Real Madrid.
A few days ago, the president of Real Madrid, Florentino Perez, indicated that he still wanted to bring Mbappe in the future, “but not this year”, he said then. Although he has just lost Karim Benzema and his big dream could end up for sale, will he finally change his plans? This is one of the many questions for the coming weeks at PSG.
For now, the French capital club remains firm with his number 7, but the idea of seeing him free in a year already seems forgotten. And that changes a lot of things in Paris.
