PSG forward and France world champion Kylian Mbappe wrapped up the 2022/23 season in great fashion scoring one of the two Parisian goals against Clermont (2-3) on his way to reaching 29 goals, enough to claim the title as Ligue 1's leading scorer for this campaign.
Mbappe was presented with the prestigious award following his outstanding performance in the match against Clermont on MD38. His goal helped him to reach 29 on the year and that meant a fifth consecutive goalscoring title finding its way toward Mbappe's personal trophy cabinet.
Throughout the season, the Parisian forward showcased his exceptional scoring prowess, finding the back of the net 29 times in 34 games. This remarkable achievement marks his fifth consecutive win of the individual honor, something only done once before in the history of the French top-flight division.
In securing the top spot, Mbappe outpaced other talented players in the league, including Alexandre Lacazette (Lyon, 27 goals) and Jonathan David (Lille, 24).
Kylian Mbappe spoke about his future after the loss against Clermont
When asked if the defeat against Clermont is a disappointing way to end the season, Mbappe did not want to talk much about it: “No, I think the most important thing was still the tribute to Sergio (Rico). There are more important things than football."
The French world champion added that even if they had been thrashed, that "wouldn't have changed anything", since the title of champions was secured in the 1-1 draw against Strasbourg. Kylian pointed out that the really important thing was to "pay tribute to Sergio."
Speaking specifically about the situation of the Spanish goalkeeper, Mbappe added that they thank "all the people at the stadium, of course, but also those who supported Sergio and his family in their own way. (...) We are going to pray and send as many positive vibes as possible so that he gets out of this situation quickly.”
Mbappe, already the club's all-time top scorer and winner of five consecutive awards as the Ligue 1 top-goalscorer, as usual, was also questioned about his future. The native from Bondy said that he is “just here to play," adding that "I still have a contract and I'm here to play. The club does what it can and I am happy with what the club does. The rest is none of my business."
