PSG had a rough return to Ligue 1 earlier this week when they faced and barely defeated Strasbourg (2-1). It took no time for Kylian Mbappe to enter the scoreboard after returning from Qatar, though, hitting his 56th goal in 56 appearances in the 2022 calendar year beating his own record--only, that includes PSG and France goals.
By scoring against Strasbourg, Mbappe beat his number of goals in a calendar year in the Parisian shirt making his way (once more) into the capital club's golden books.
Scorer of a last-minute penalty against Strasbourg to save PSG from a draw and earn them three more points ahead of Sunday's match away at Lens, Mbappe finished the calendar year with more goals than he had ever before in 12 months whether that is exclusive in Ligue 1 games or just in all competitions.
Scoring a game-winning goal would have been a reason good enough for Mbappe to be happy last Wednesday. It was only just the start of the story, though.
Thanks to his penalty kick and subsequent goal, Mbappe converted his 32nd goal of the calendar year in Ligue 1 play and 44th overall in all competitions playing at PSG.
Mbappe returned from the World Cup having already tied his prior best of 31 goals, who he scored back in 2019. One more goal put his 2022 calendar year on a plane of its own and into an entirely new stratosphere.
Even then, Mbappe will need to keep working in 2023 if he wants to become the ultimate PSG goalscorer in Ligue 1: Edinson Cavani leads all Parisian strikers when it comes to goals scored in a single calendar year after hitting 36 goals in 2017, followed by Carlos Bianchi with 35 goals in 1978.
Kylian Mbappe broke a personal record scoring 56 goals in 56 games with France and PSG in 2022
When it comes to goals scored in all competitions in a single year, Cavani also led all PSG strikers in history by hitting 49 in 50 apps back in 2017.
With his last goal of the year scored last Wednesday, Mbappe reached 56 in 56 games. He did it by scoring 44 with Paris Saint-Germain and 12 more with France.
Cavani is still the most prolific all-competitions goalscorer in PSG's history with 200 goals in 301 matches. Mbappe has scored 191 goals in 238 games with PSG.
It's just a matter of (short) time before Mbappe ends up as the Parisian club's leading goalscorer, and that might happen no later than the second leg of the Champions League clash against Bayern Munich as part of the Round of 16 of the competition, scheduled for Feb/Mar play.
Mbappe has scored a total of 132 goals for PSG in Ligue 1 and is now just six goals away from tying Cavani's 138 total goals scored in the competition in a single season. Mbappe already has scored 13 goals in the 2022-23 Ligue 1 season, so we expect him to beat Cavani's record through next February.
