On the eve of the match, a preliminary update on the likely absentees for Paris Saint-Germain vs Girona, the first Champions League game of the season to be played on Wednesday, is already available. PSG will be without at least four players, while Girona has only one uncertainty.

The Champions League returns this week with its new format featuring 36 teams and a league phase replacing the traditional group stage. For their first of eight matches in this new phase, PSG will host the Catalan club Girona on Wednesday evening. Girona is participating in this competition for the first time in its history after finishing 3rd in La Liga last season, ahead of Atletico Madrid.

For this season's Champions League opener, Luis Enrique will be without at least four players. These include long-term absentees Lucas Hernandez, Presnel Kimpembe, and Goncalo Ramos, as well as his starting goalkeeper and new vice-captain Gianluigi Donnarumma, who suffered a muscle strain in his right thigh against Brest last Saturday.

The Italian goalkeeper will be undergoing treatment this week and will not feature in PSG vs Girona on Wednesday. Warren Zaire-Emery and Vitinha, who were injured during the international break and missed the match against Brest, are still uncertain for the Girona game, but the outlook is fairly positive.

The French midfielder resumed training with the team on Sunday, while the Portuguese took part in Monday’s session, two days before the match. PSG will train again on Tuesday, which will give Luis Enrique more information before making his final decisions.

For Girona, who were defeated 4-1 by Barcelona this weekend, there are no reported injuries but there is one uncertainty. Venezuelan midfielder Yangel Herrera, a key player for the Catalan club, injured his adductor before the September international break and was rested against Barcelona. He has a chance of returning against PSG on Wednesday, but his participation is not yet certain.
