PSG began their defense of the Ligue 1 trophy with an emphatic 1- 4 victory away to Le Havre. This win was crucial for so many reasons which we will delve into. It was vital particularly because of the Kylian Mbappe debacle this summer.

1. It will give them momentum before the Champions League

If PSG continues to win their games then it will give them much-needed momentum ahead of the start of the revamped tournament. This is very important as they will confidently go into their Champions League. If they string a few wins without the services of Mbappe then they will believe that they can pose a problem to any team in the tournament despite the higher quality in the Champions League.

2. They may not need to sign anyone untill the winter

If Luis Enrique can mastermind a few more wins before the transfer window then he will be under the illusion that they may not need to sign any players until the winter transfer window. The Spaniard will believe that if he can get more out of Bradley Barcola, Ousmane Dembele, Randal Kolo Muani, and Goncalo Ramos they won't need to find a replacement for Mbappe. They may also be reluctant to find a replacement if they find a way for Xavi Simons to come back next summer.

3. PSG won't play catch up

If the French champions started the season poorly then they would need to play catch up on the other teams in the league. The other teams will also believe that Luis Enrique's side can be got at if they get off to a bad start. An emphatic 1-4 win to begin the season sends out the message to the rest of the league that they are not going anywhere anytime soon.
