Sergio Conceicao emerged as a surprise candidate to be hired by PSG as their next head coach through Saturday. It was even reported that he already met the PSG brass in Paris yesterday, although there are doubts about that being the case.
The only known fact is that PSG and favorite candidate Julian Nagelsmann have broken their talks and the German and former Bayern Munich coach is not going to manage PSG next season.
With Christophe Galtier still holding onto his position (and under contract until June 2024), nothing is clear about the future of PSG's touchline. The French club is still finalizing the last details to formalize his departure, but that's been the case for a few days and weeks now and the situation seems to never get resolved.
Alongside negotiations with Galtier, PSG's leaders are actively searching for a new coach, with the likes of Luis Enrique, Thiago Motta, and Xabi Alonso heavily linked to the capital club. Another candidate, labeled a "mystery man" by some outlets, might have already been uncovered: FC Porto's current head coach Sergio Conceicao.
According to A Bola, there were rumors of Sergio Conceiçao's presence in Paris yesterday, but the Portuguese coach was not in the French capital on Saturday according to a correction made by the same outlet after their initial report.
The Portuguese sports daily clarified the rumors saying that there have been contacts between Conceicao and PSG "for days," adding that the manager is "appreciated by Luis Campos, PSG's sports advisor, as well as Nasser al-Khelaifi."
A Bola revealed that "negotiations with Jorge Mendes, Conceicao's agent, are already underway."
Even with all of the above being said, Conceicao is under contract at Porto through June 2024, and there is an €18m release clause to be paid by PSG if they want to extract him from Lisbon and appoint him this summer before his contract runs out.
Conceicao is fluid in the French language and he would come with Ligue 1 experience after managing at Nantes for a season a little over five years ago. Pinto da Costa, the president of Porto, recently stated that Conceicao "would honor his contract," though that's to be seen with the huge appeal of PSG knocking at his subconscious.
