Paris Saint-Germain thrashed Atalanta 4-0 at home to open their Champions League campaign. The reigning Champions delivered an astonishing performance as Khvicha Kvaratskhelia and Marquinhos shined in the victory.
PSG 4 vs 0 Atalanta: Player ratings of Champions League clash
Lucas Chevalier - 7 : The Parisien's new goalkeeper didn't have much to do - apart from an extremely routine save from Nikola Kristoviç's second half volley. His good start to life in Paris continues though, as his ball playing continued to look excellent, both with short passing and longer balls. Indeed, Luis Enrique's faith in him as an improvement on the departing Gianluigi Donnarumma in that department looks increasingly justified.
Achraf Hakimi - 8.5 : Hakimi continues to look like the best full back in the world (with his only real competition at the moment being the man at the other side of PSG's defense). Devastating going forward, he should have had an assist for Bradley Barcola within the first ten minutes (although he eventually did get a less impressive one for Kvaratskhelia's goal later on) and hit the post soon after, as he marauded forwards yet again. He also remained defensively vigilant throughout, and was able to handle both Maldini and Bernasconi, neither of whom made any impact at all. Another great Champions League performance from the Moroccan star.
Marquinhos - 9 : What an assured display from the Parisian captain. Led from the front by scoring an early goal after his high pressing led to a ball recovery, and almost created another goal with a brilliant long ball to Nuno Mendes. Was calm and assured at the back. Brilliant leader's performance, and a deserved man of the match.
William Pacho - 8 : Another classy display from a man rapidly establishing himself as one of the best center-backs in Europe. He calmly took care of everything that came his way, and his physical presence and athletic dominance, as well as his composure in one v one defending, make him a player to keep an eye on among discussions about the best center-backs in Europe. His contribution in last season's Champions League run went somewhat under the radar, but if he continues in this vein, Paris Saint Germain might just got far again.
Nuno Mendes - 8.5 : What a brilliant player Mendes is. An absolute joy to watch, both scintillating on the ball and defensively solid. His goal was brilliantly taken, and he was an attacking threat throughout, once again showcasing his brilliant dribbling in close spaces. His status as the best Left-back in the world hasn't been in doubt for some time, but yet another brilliant display in the Champions League doesn't do any harm to his argument. Would have been Man of the Match were it not for an egregious early one v one miss.
Vitinha - 8 : Another metronomic masterclass from the midfield maestro. Able to pull defenses apart with his fantastic movement, Vitinha occasionally even popped up as a number nine, before returning to his tempo-controlling deeper role. 93 passes completed, with a 95% passing accuracy are exactly the numbers desired from the player at the base of the midfield.
Fabian Ruiz - 8 : Another 8, and another fine performance from a PSG player. Ruiz has tended to really raise his game in the Champions League over the last few months, and this was no exception, as his silky link up and ability to bomb forwards into attacking zones were key in PSG's early domination. Indeed, it was his ball across the box that found Marquinhos, who scored PSG's opener. Another excellent performance from the ever improving Spaniard, and he was replaced by Warren Zaire Emery after 55 minutes.
Joao Neves - 7.5 : A fine performance from the Portugese international, whose intelligence and tenacity never go unnoticed and were once again key features of PSG's midfield dominance. However, it must be said that the potential injury suffered by Neves, which saw him come off after less than an hour, is a potential dampener on what was otherwise an excellent night for the Champions of Europe. Luis Enrique and all supporters of the club will hope that it is nothing serious.
Khvicha Kvaratskhelia - 8.5 : Speaking of injuries, here was a man who wasn't even supposed to be fit enough to play in this game - but who, almost miraculously, recovered from his blow in Sunday's game against Lens in time to start here. Coming off the right, a position in which he hasn't played much at all, he looked supremely at ease. He crowned an excellent performance with a rocket of a strike into Carnesecchi's net, after a mazy dribble, and was a threat to Atalanta's backline all night long. He also completed 4 key passes, and succeeded in all 3 dribbles that he attempted.
Senny Mayulu - 7 : A solid, if unspectacular, shift at striker from the youngster, who repaid Luis Enrique's faith in him by putting in some hard work in a position that he's not necessarily used to playing in. Some nice link up with Barcola on the left hand side were among the highlights of his performance. Replaced up front by Ramos after 55 minutes.
Bradley Barcola - 5.5 : A disappointing night individually for the man in form. Ever a threat with his dribbling, his finishing (often in the past a cause for concern) was at fault once again, as he wasted a number of chances, including a penalty that was truly woefully struck. A shame after his fine performance at the weekend, and he will hope to improve in this weekend's 'Classique' against Marseille.
