Paris Saint-Germain vs AS Monaco - Luis Enrique pre-match press conference

The Spaniard coach sat in the room and was asked about the concurrence between his goalkeepers, Gianluigi Donnarumma and Matvey Safonov.

Luis Enrique : "I want every player to be hopeful"

"My objective as a coach is really simple, it is to create competition between all the players. I want every player to be hopeful of playing. That is my objective in general. Though, there may be situations where players can be involved or not. It depends on various factors, and everyone needs to be prepared."

Luis Enrique : "With Ousmane, we want him to be at the heart of the team"

The coach was then asked about Ousmane Dembélé's role within the team and how much of a leader PSG's top scorer is or could be for the team.

" Yes, since I have been here, and I have known Ousmane Dembélé since his Barcelona days. He is a very open person. He has connected well with all his teammates, and he is in spectacular form at the moment. It is obvious that his numbers have dramatically improved, when compared to the last few seasons or his whole career.

"So, the idea with Ousmane is not to set any limits. And being important for the team is key, it is not just about scoring goals, because to score goals, someone has to give you an assist. With Ousmane, we want him to be at the heart of the team, and to make a difference. We know he works hard defensively and transmit his ability as a leader. It is not just about scoring goals, which I have seen many times, and being a leader is different."

Luis Enrique : "I said that I rather have many players scoring goals than one player scoring 40 goals"

Luis Enrique the answered a question about how much is side improved offensively despite Kylian Mbappé’s departure of the club this season.

" I think I was very brave when I said last season that we would have a better team this season in offensively and defensively. And I continue to think we are better in attack and in defence, the numbers prove it. Of course, I think it is difficult to say tthat about a player like Kylian Mbappé, and I could say that again now. Of course the other players took this as a challenge. Of course, everyone loved him as a player.

"But I think the players responded very well to his departure. I said that I rather have many players scoring goals than one player scoring 40 goals. Only one player was scoring before, now lots of them are, so the team is improving. We showed our maturity in a situation we didn't want, so the level of maturity is high."
