Paris Saint-Germain are gearing up for the biggest Ligue 1 clash of the season when they travel to the southeast of France to compete against Marseille at the Stade Vélodrome. These two sides are the most successful in French football, and their dislike of each other stems from the fact that this fixture pits the industrial, southern port city of Marseille against the financial capital of Paris. The rivalry heated up in the 1990s when both clubs grew in power and success.

Both sides have gotten off to slow starts this campaign. Les Parisiens have been victorious in only one of their four league games thus far, drawing twice and losing once. Their sole league victory came away to Brest last week.

Luis Enrique's side won 0-1 courtesy of a strike by Ferran Torres in the fifth minute. Likewise, Marseille have only been victorious in one of their four league games. Les Olympiens only win came at home to Strasbourg on matchday one of the Ligue 1 season. They will not come into this encounter full of confidence after a 4-1 defeat away to Besiktas in the Europa League on Thursday.

Paris Saint-Germain team news

PSG possible starting lineup: Safonov, Hakimi, Marquinhos, Pacho, Mendes, Zaire-Emery, Vitinha, Neves, Dembele, Kvaratskhelia, Torres

Marseille team news

Bruno Genesio will not have a depleted squad as the only absentee is Tochukwu Nnadi who is dealing with a knee injury.

Marseille possible starting lineup: De Lange, Weah, Egan-Riley, Aguerd, Emerson, Hojberg, Harit, Gomes, Abdelli, Paixao, Gouiri

Prediction: Marseille 2-3 PSG

Les Parsians are going to be in for a difficult encounter, as the Marseille players could turn up for the game because they are aware of the magnitude of this fixture. Despite this, it is hard to look past a narrow win for the European champions, as they are the better side and the Marseille players will be jaded following their European exploits on Thursday.
