After a worrying start in Ligue this season, PSG gained some momentum before the international break with three consecutive wins in all competitions, including a victory in Le Classique against Marseille. This positive trend was continued with a convincing 3-1 home win over Le Mans last weekend.
Now they are gearing up to take on Manchester City who remain unbeaten in all competition as they come out a dominant 3-0 away win against Liverpool at Anfield. It will be a difficult task for both sides who will look to secure their second win in the League Phase of the Champions League.
For this game, Luis Enrique came back to his usual starters with both Nuno Mendes and Ousmane Dembélé returning to the starting XI after being rested last weekend in Ligue 1. Meanwhile, Vitinha, Ruiz, Pacho Marquinhos, Zaire-Emery and Doué moved to the starting lineup. Maghnes Akliouche, Hakimi and Safonov are the only players to retain their position in the team for this game.
Starting Lineups:
Paris Saint-Germain's starting XI: Safonov; Marquinhos, Pacho, Nuno Mendes, Hakimi; Vitinha, Ruiz, Warren Zaire-Emery; Dembélé, Akliouche, Doué.
Manchester City's starting XI: Donnarumma; Dias, Guehi, Gvardiol, Khusanov; Fernadez, Anderson, Semenyo, Cherki, Doku; Haaland.
The first big chance of this game came in the opening 10 minutes as a Man City corner kick brought danger onto Safonov's goal with the deflection hitting the crossbar, Semenyo followed up from close range but his effort went above the crossbar. Less than two minutes later, a wonderful collective move put Désiré Doué in good shooting position and the Frenchman made the most of it from long range, leaving no chance to Donnarumma in the bottom right corner (13'). This goal was followed by another for PSG with Dembélé and Doué combining for another wonderful goal that doubled the European Champions' lead just 1 minutes and 39 seconds later (15').
After 30 minutes, the visitors made it 3-0. Another great collective move put Vitinha in great position in the box and the Portuguese left no chance to his former teammate Donnarumma. The Parisians are in complete control of proceedings with the Citizen appearing to drown in the contest.
The hosts started the second half with better intentions and logically reduced their deficit through Erling Haaland, just eight minutes after the restart (53'). Moments later, Semenyo came close to revive the hopes of his team, but his effort hit the crossbar.
Maghnes Akliouche made it 4-1 for PSG with a remarkable strike from outside the box, but the Frenchman was helped by Donnarumma's dramatic mistake (63'). A wonderful goal-line deflection from Nuno Mendes prevented City from scoring a second goal as they increased their pressure on Safonov's goal. This pressure was rewarded shortly after as Haaland scored his second goal of the night (75').
While City dramatically increased the pressure, Paris lost the control they had on the game, reigniting the Citizen's hopes in this game. In the last 10 minutes, the Russian goalkeeper made an unreal save to prevent Haaland from scoring a hat-trick.
In the dying embers, PSG were given a penalty but Donnarumma easily saved Ferran Torres' effort. Nonetheless, the European Champions saw out the game.
