Injured and not called-up to represent Spain during the international window, Fabian Ruiz is enjoying some time off to recover but also to reminisce on his time at the club, focusing on their historical treble-winning campaign last year and on Kylian Mbappé's departure of the club last season. Speaking to SoFoot, the Spanish international reflected on the role of Luis Enrique as well.
Fabian Ruiz spoke out on Luis Enrique and Kylian Mbappé's departure
When Kylian Mbappé left the club ahead of the 2024-2025 season to join Real Madrid, many thought that PSG would crumble after losing one of the best players in the world, able to score over 40 goals per season. However, Fabian Ruiz explained how the departure of the Frenchman may have made the team seemingly stronger thanks to Luis Enrique's belief in his squad.
" Mbappé's departure from PSG? Luis Enrique made us believe that even with his departure, we would form a team as good as, or even better than, the previous year. He told us that we would all pull in the same direction and manage to collectively score all the goals that Mbappé used to score. And in the end, that's exactly what happened, we shared this task among all of us."
Without an extraordinary striker, and the all-time top scorer of the club, Luis Enrique made sure to empower all of his players, giving them the responsibility to bring success to the club and created one of the most dominant squad of the last five years. The Spaniard's tactician approach led to PSG's unprecedented triumph in the Champions League after a treble-winning season.
"The proof is that last season several players surpassed their personal records in terms of goals and assists", said Fabian Ruiz. "I think this PSG has several stars, with great talent, at the very highest international level. The proof is, nine of us were nominated for the Ballon d'Or!"
Luis Enrique managed to create an ideal environment for his players to help them thrive, while being part of a successful collective. Though the players had a crucial role, it was the former FC Barcelona coach who was the architect of this squad. Now the team will need to prove that they can remain at the top of European football. As they will look to conquer Europe and the Champions League once again this season.
" In football, the hardest part is not reaching the top but staying there. Our challenge is to win the Champions League two, three or four more times. It won't be easy, but who knows? What is certain is that we will do everything to achieve it. The idea now is that this first star should be aturning point. Now that we have one, we must try to win many more. I think we have shown that giving everything is the key to success."
